Publicada no Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, a pesquisa descobriu que consumir álcool logo após o treinamento de resistência (como aquele que você faz ao levantar a barra do supino, por exemplo) reduz a habilidade do seu organismo em reparar as fibras musculares e, por consequência, construir músculos. A isso, chamamos de hipertrofia.

“Sabemos que doses moderadas de bebida alcoólica não são problema”, alivia Jakob Vingreen, professor de biologia e kinesiologia da Universidade do norte do Texas (EUA). “Porém, se seu objetivo na academia é treinar pesado, você não deve sair para tomar todas. Ou então, se você sabe que hoje é dia de beber até cair, não vá para a sala de musculação. É possível que no dia seguinte, seu desempenho seja muito pior do que se você ficasse sem treinar por muito tempo.”

Ao longo do estudo, 10 homens e 9 mulheres realizaram 6 séries de agachamento na máquina smith e, logo em seguida, receberam doses de bebida alcoólica e também de placebo. Após uma biópsia na musculatura dos participantes homens, o resultado indicou um decréscimo nas reações metabólicas e fisiológicas responsáveis por recuperar e aumentar as fibras musculares pós treino daqueles que consumiram álcool.

Uma potencial explicação para essa reação foi divulgada pelo LiveScience: o crescimento muscular no organismo masculino é estimulado por um pico de testosterona após os exercícios de resistência e o álcool, aparentemente, inibe a produção deste hormônio. Diferente do que acontece com as mulheres, já que a fisiologia feminina conta com muito menos secreção de testosterona.
